Traveling can be difficult at even the best of times, but if you're carrying formula or breast milk with you, things get a little more tricky. According to the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, you are allowed to bring more than 3 ounces of breast milk or formula on the plane, with or without your baby, as long as you declare it at the security checkpoint. Prepare ahead of time to ensure that you keep baby's milk safe and that you don't encounter trouble at security.

By AirplaneStep 1

Print out the TSA regulations regarding formula and breast milk to bring with you. The limit for most liquids is 3 ounces. Though you can bring more formula or breast milk than this, some agents may not be fully aware of the TSA policy. It's helpful to have this on hand to show personnel who may be confused. The document is available at the TSA.gov website.

Step 2

Package your breast milk or formula in plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. If you use only plastic bags, you'll run the risk of an agent inadvertently breaking the bag, causing the milk to leak. Plastic containers are safest. Pack more than you think you need.

Step 3

Keep your containers of milk in a separate bag. An insulated bag works well if you're carrying breast milk or prepared formula. You're also allowed to keep an ice pack to keep it cool.

Step 4

Tell the security agent that you're carrying breast milk or formula and require a special search. You may not want your baby's milk to go through the x-ray machine. You'll have to go to a separate area for your search. Expect a same-sex agent to perform any bodily searches. The agent may wipe your plastic containers with a cotton swab or pad to test for explosives.

Step 5

Purchase bottled water once you are inside the boarding area if you need to to mix it with powdered formula.

Step 6

Keep a bottle or two easily accessible during take off. You can store the rest in the overhead bin.

By Car, Bus or TrainStep 1

Store your baby milk in plastic containers. Baby bottles work well, but regular plastic containers can do the trick as well.

Step 2

Keep the plastic containers in a cool place, such as an insulated bag or cooler.

Step 3

Feed your baby her milk as needed.

Beckhams expecting fourth child

 By Sarah Funnell10 January 2011 09:10

David and Victoria Beckham have announced they are expecting their fourth child this summer.
Football star David announced the news at the weekend on Facebook.
The couple's three sons - Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, 8, and Cruz, 5 - were said to be "very excited" about having a new brother or sister.
Former England captain David, 35, was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur but manager Harry Redknapp admitted today the deal "looked like a no-goer".
The message on David Beckham's Facebook page said: "I've got some great news to tell you all. Victoria and I are expecting our fourth child this summer. The boys are very excited about the arrival of a new brother or sister."
The spokeswoman for the Beckhams declined to confirm the due date of Beckham number four but only that he/she will arrive this summer.

You Can CHOOSE Happiness!

I was watching a movie the other evening, One True Thing, with Meryl Streep and Renee Zellwegger. Meryl's character was dying toward the end of the movie, and she looked at her daughter, played by Zellwegger, and told her to choose happiness in her life. She explained that it was much easier to choose happiness in life than to choose to be unhappy. For some reason this one statement really impacted me. It was so simple yet so profound.
How much energy do you waste complaining about things? How much energy do you spend wishing your life were different in some capacity? On the flip side, how often do you express gratitude for what you do have in your life? How often do you take a step back and really embrace all the positives that life has to offer? As simple as it sounds, it really is a choice that you can make. Sometimes it is just flipping the switch in your head that you are going to look at things differently and choose to feel happy and blessed. I am not saying that you need to ignore the difficulties that life throws at you, because there will be many in life, but it is a matter of what you want your life to look and feel like the majority of the time. You can choose happiness!
Personally, when I am grounded and positive in nature, things tend to come more naturally. In essence, the universe provides what I am focusing on. When I am going through a rough patch, everything else seems so dire and magnified. If you don't feel that you are a "happy" person by nature, that doesn't mean it is a lost cause. You need to begin by focusing on what brings you joy now. When do you feel the happiest? Trust that you do have the power by intention to bring more joy into your life. Trust that by taking baby steps you can get rid of the negative voice on your shoulder, and be guided more by the positive and hopeful voice. Know that it takes far less energy to experience joy than it does to focus on the negatives. I am not saying that you are going to wake up tomorrow and just feel happy and jubilant, but you can try to see things through a different colored lens and experience a bit more of the joy factor.
Do you feel a lack of happiness in your life? Do you feel as though your life is just passing by? Do you feel as though you've lost control? Acknowledgment is the first step in making some changes. You can give in to the hopeless feelings, or you can take charge. Know that each and every one of us is born with the right to be happy and content. No matter your circumstances, there is always something you can do to begin to turn things around.
What makes you happy? When do you experience the most joy? This week keep a journal of when you felt joy. Maybe it was when you were singing to music. Maybe it was when you were taking an aerobics class. Maybe it was when you were reading a good book. It's important to detail these times so you can put yourself in those situations more often. Know what it takes to light you up and then do more of it.
One important step here is to take some much needed quiet time. I believe it is crucial to set aside this time every day. This time gives you the opportunity to say your affirmations, to pray if you do so, to reflect on what you are grateful for, or to just quiet your mind. This is when you set the tone for the rest of the day. Take this time to bring about the positive and supportive voice and lift your spirit.

What The BLEEP Do Babies Know?!

By Frans Plooij on January 12, 2011

Have you ever seen the movie, What the Bleep Do We Know? If not... do so! The way they explain the basics of quantum physics is quite similar to the way I explain how babies' brains change dramatically every so often and why they can't perceive certain things before each change in The Wonder Weeks.

In What the Bleep Do We Know, they explain to us that the Native Americans couldn't perceive Columbus' boats at the horizon. Why? Not because they had problems with their vision, but because boats at the horizon were so very different from anything they had ever seen before.

With babies, it is a little like this, too. If their brains are not yet wired to perceive something that we adults can see, then that something isn't there as far as the babies are concerned. Of course, there are huge differences between the Native Americans not perceiving the boats and the babies being unable to perceive certain things, yet, but the basic idea is the same.

After years of studies, we found out that babies go through 10 mental developmental leaps in their first 20 months of life, and after each leap, they perceive the world around them in a totally different way. That frightens them and that is why they get so fussy for some time! The bad news is that such periods are very difficult for both parents and babies and they are characterized by the three C's: Clingy, Cranky and Crying.

And now the good news: We know exactly when these periods start, what babies are able to perceive and learn after each leap and why babies can suddenly do and understand ten times more than before each leap.

The 10 new types or levels of perception that are given to your baby at predictable ages are arranged hierarchically. Each new higher level of perception is superposed onto the lower levels of perception that are present already. If your baby has reached only the fifth level of perception, that level is on top. Also, what are peak experiences for your baby are things we adults take for granted. With every Wonder Week, every leap enables your baby to perceive the world more in the way we adults do; every leap brings your baby one step closer. So, the younger your baby is, the more difficult it is for us as parents to descend to our babies' way of looking at the world. But, it is crucial that we try. If you succeed, you can understand and better able to deal with things such as:

Sleeping problemsCranky, Crying and Clingy phasesSeparation anxietyTemper tantrums

And so on.

The best solution to all these problems is to know and be aware of how your baby perceives the world. Basically, to Know What the Bleep Babies Know...

Foods to Avoid Giving to Babies

Foods to Avoid Giving to Babies

Babies love to try new foods. Babies are curious little creatures, and love to explore new tastes and textures as they learn about their new world. If your little one is making the change from baby food to table food, there are a few rules you need to follow as you introduce new foods. While most foods can be safely given to babies under one year, there are certain foods that you should avoid until your baby is older.Hidden Toxins and Allergens
Honey should never be included in the diet of children under one year, as it can contain spores of Clostridium botulinum that causes a type of botulism to which infants are susceptible. Likewise, avoid corn syrup, as according to MayoClinic.com, it may contain the same type of spores. As a child grows, her intestinal tract develops and will eventually be able to prevent these spores from multiplying and she will be able to eat these foods safely. In addition, a study conducted by Duke University Medical Center shows that allergic reactions to peanuts and peanut butter have doubled since the year 2000 and are being reported in children as young as 14 months. Duke recommends that parents refrain from giving babies any food containing peanuts until after the child reaches the age of two, as he will then be capable of vocalizing the discomfort experienced with an allergic reaction.
Hard to Digest Foods
The protein in cow's milk cannot be digested properly by an infant, hence your pediatrician's warning to keep your baby on breast milk or formula until he is one year old. Cow's milk also lacks the proper nutrients and contains the wrong amount of minerals that a growing baby needs. Likewise, citrus juice is hard for a baby to digest and may result in a heavy diaper rash.
Hard Choking Hazards
Hard candies, popcorn, nuts, grapes and cherry tomatoes can lodge in a baby's throat and cause her to choke; round fruit should always be quartered before offering it to your baby. Likewise, any hard food that doesn't immediately break down in the mouth, such as hot dogs, celery, carrots, meats and candies, should be cut into pea-sized pieces before you offer them to a baby.
Soft Choking Hazards
Many moms think if a food is soft it must be safe, but that's not always the case. Marshmallows and soft candies can get stuck in a baby's throat, as can peanut butter and other thick soft foods. Raisins and other small sticky fruits can clump together and create a choking hazard and should be offered one at a time.

Humanity and the Butterfly: Time to Spread Your Wings!

By Colette Baron-Reid on December 27, 2010
We’re living in times of unprecedented transformation, challenge, and opportunity. Despite our modern progress and technological advances in the last few decades, global upset, environmental crisis, economic strife, poverty, and war have taken their toll. Our old approaches, based on separation, ignorance, greed, and materialism, have reached a dangerous peak. As a world, we’re being called to a whole new level of consciousness.
So, how can we pave the way to a positive future? Should we scurry to our beds, throw the covers over our heads, and just hope it all goes away, hoping someone else will figure it out for us? Or, do we rise to the occasion and awaken to our personal and collective responsibilities in creating a new planetary experience based on unity, love, and respect?
On December 21, 2012, we move into a new world cycle. While some people frantically claim that we’re heading for doomsday with 2012, we’re NOT. The 2012 date marks the completion of this World Age Cycle, but it’s not an end point or something to fear. Our current challenges aren’t signaling the end at all. Rather, they’re beckoning us to wake up and take full responsibility, both as individuals and a collective, in the shaping of our next world age.
Let’s step back for a moment and consider the experience of one little caterpillar:
Once there was a little caterpillar who dreamed of becoming a beautiful butterfly. He woke up confused. “What? Me? Fly? Wow… cool,” he thought. “But come to think about it, I’m afraid of heights! No way, caterpillars don’t fly.” So he went about his life exactly the way it had been, chewing on leaves like the others because… well, that’s what caterpillars like him were supposed to do. He began to hear voices urging him to fly but that made him move further to the center of the leaf, further resisting the voices that began to bother him. “What’s happening to me? Is anyone else feeling this way?” Along with the scary yet compelling voices in his head, he started to get sick like he had a bad flu and his skin began to fall off.
So the little caterpillar, getting more and more ill, continued going through the treacherous process of shedding his skin. His immune system was being attacked by the source of the voices- imaginal cells that kept multiplying inside him. Each time an imaginal cell created another one, he heard, “I can fly!” He was seriously having the nightmare experience of his life. What was he becoming? What about his caterpillar life? Why wasn’t it working for him anymore??
And so our little friend kept getting sick and tired from all the shedding and feeling miserable. One day he was finally able to crawl to another plant, but then he discovered he had to hang upside down. Talk about scary! He worked through all his fear and, compelled by something deep inside him, he found the last caterpillar strength within him. After several attempts he was finally able to attach himself to the leaf. With hard work, he formed a hard casing around his body. Then he remains stuck inside this little, claustrophobic cocoon for what seems like eternity. He’s tired, sick, and having crazy hallucinations about flying free and happy in the air. Nothing makes sense anymore, and he just wants to give up. He falls asleep for a while exhausted, not sure who he is anymore.
In fact, while he’s inside the cocoon- painful and scary as it was- the parts of him that died brought new parts to life! How could this be?
He wakes up in the dark and finds he has a different kind of strength now. He pushes and pushes and cracks his cocoon open and… the once slimy caterpillar finally emerges as a beautiful butterfly!
***
Humanity and the Butterfly: Time to Spread Your Wings!
Of course, I added some humor to illustrate this natural process, but here’s my point: As a world, we’re now in a similar process of metamorphosis. Like a caterpillar has to transform to become one of the most beautiful insects on earth, we must go through our own metamorphosis to reach a whole new and more beautiful level of existence. Right now, we’re collectively in that sick and tired phase. Rather than give up and focus on catastrophe, as a collective we need to change our perceptions and focus instead on community and respect but also to honor the process of death and change.
Biologist Dr.Bruce Lipton talked about this power of collective thinking in his amazing book, Spontaneous Evolution. When Bruce was working with cells, he noticed that when he changed their environment, it wasn’t the gene that controlled the fate of the cells. It was the environment. And when we change the environment of our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs to one that is supportive, loving, and healthy, we become well. Bruce illustrates how the same is true for humanity- we cannot evolve if all the cells (us) are focused on competition and separation. Bruce calls us the imaginal cells in human consciousness evolution. Imaginal cells are responsible for taking a caterpillar to a butterfly. And, that’s us!
On a more individual level, many of us are also going through a personal metamorphosis. If you’re longing for something to change in your life, think of the experience of the caterpillar. How can you use your imagination to reframe your experience?
Ultimately, through new thinking, trust, and imagination, we can create a whole new experience for ourselves and our world. Remember, a creepy, crawling caterpillar becomes a one of the most beautiful flying creatures in our world through transformation.
Exercise:
What’s your vision for the world? Write out your dream for the world and for yourself. Then share it!
I’ll start:
My vision for the world is that our governments detach from their enmeshment with big business and allow a new source of renewable energy to replace our dependence on oil. My vision is that we all treat the earth as our First Mother, ensuring respect for all of life. I see humane treatment of animals, especially all that are raised for our nourishment. My vision is that we share the wealth of the world to ensure that no one goes hungry. I see clean oceans, clean drinking water for every person, and untouched protected forests. I envision peace and inspired right livelihood for all, bringing abundance to all. As global citizens, I see cooperation and true democracy by the people for the people, ensuring fairness, justice, and the pursuit of happiness. In my own life, I see myself doing my part to relieve the suffering of others and to always be inspired and creative, showing others how to find magic and meaning in the story of their lives. I envision the flow and being part of the solution not the problem!
What’s yours? I hope you’ll write in and share it with me and others who read this blog!

How Do I Help a Baby Sleep at High Altitude?

How Do I Help a Baby Sleep at High Altitude?

How Do I Help a Baby Sleep at High Altitude? By Lillian Downey on January 4, 2011  If your baby has a cold and/or ear infection, it may be best to postpone air travel. It's difficult to tell how your baby will react to high altitudes. Some babies handle plane trips and high-altitude destinations with no problems at all. Some have mild ear-pressure related discomfort. About 25 percent will experience will experience altitude sickness, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The key to getting your baby to sleep under these conditions is to keep him comfortable and try to regulate the pressure in his ears.Step 1
Wait to travel by plane or to a high altitude location until your baby is older than 3 months old, according to pediatrician Suzanne Dixon, writing for Baby Center. Talk to your doctor about when it's safe to fly or travel to a high altitude location if your baby was premature or suffers from lung or heart problems.
Step 2
Wrap your baby in extra blankets or dress him warmly. Temperatures are typically cooler at higher altitudes and your baby is more likely to sleep at a comfortable temperature.
Step 3
Offer your baby your breast, a bottle or a pacifier as you make your initial ascent. Your baby lacks the ability to yawn or chew to regulate ear pressure like you do and may get fussy. Sucking is the best remedy for this problem. Once your ears have popped and returned to normal pressure, you can assume your baby's have, too.
Step 4
Feed your fussy baby even if it isn't time for a scheduled feeding. You'll need to provide him with more breast milk or formula to compensate for increased fluid needs at high altitudes. This will help keep your baby satisfied and hydrated enough to sleep well.
Step 5
Call your pediatrician if your baby shows signs of altitude sickness, such as fussiness, poor appetite and vomiting and a general sense of irritability or discomfort. You may have trouble getting him to sleep if symptoms persist. Care for your baby as if he had a cold or flu as long as his symptoms remain mild.

Why Is My Baby So Fussy?

Why Is My Baby So Fussy? Why Is My Baby So Fussy? By Erin Schreiner on January 4, 2011 Jupiterimages/LacuraUS/Getty Images] Some babies are more prone to fussiness. While moms live for the smiles their babies send their way, all too often, these periods of happiness are interrupted by fussiness. If your baby seems to be a bit more cranky than most, there could be a host of issues at the root of this problem. By working to determine why yours isn't the happiest baby in the world, you'll be able to respond more effectively to his fussing and potentially reduce the periods of whining and crying.Automatic Crying
When your baby is a newborn, his cry isn't necessarily a choice, but an automatic response instead, reports the Ask Dr.Sears website. When infants sense they need something, they unconsciously release air that travels through their vocal cords and creates the unmistakable infant cry. Creating this potentially ear-piercing sound is easy for an infant to produce, as it requires little effort or conscious thought. This biological ability increases the likelihood of infant survival because it ensures a baby will cry when he needs food or attention, long before he can consciously comprehend that he needs something.
Getting What He Needs
Before he develops the ability to produce intelligible speech, fussing is the only way a baby can get what he needs. This means that if your child has special needs, he will likely be more fussy. If your child, for example, metabolizes food very quickly, he may be more prone to fussing, as he will spend more of his time being hungry and in need of food, as a result.
Illness-Related Fussiness
If your baby's fussiness seems to suddenly increase in regularity, it's highly likely the increase is due to illness. When babies feel aches, pains and general illness-related discomfort, they have no recourse but to cry. Some illnesses are particularly prone to causing fussing, including colic. As KidsHealth reports, doctors have yet to determine exactly what causes colic or what cures the malady, but they do have a number of hypotheses regarding the condition. Some contend that colicky babies are simply suffering from trapped gas or have an under-developed digestive tract, leading to stomach pain. Others argue that colic may be the result of an infant simply taking longer to become acclimated to the world outside the womb. Because there is no known cure for colic, dealing with a colicky baby often proves highly challenging for parents.
Onset of Tantrums
Babies who increase their fuss-frequency around one year of age are likely beginning to exhibit tantrum behavior. While many parents think they'll be free from tantrum worries until their tots hit the "terrible twos," this is not actually the case. As KidsHealth reports, tantrums generally begin to appear between the ages of one and three, meaning that your one-year-old is not outside the norm if she is a bit fuss-prone.
Reducing The Fuss

Fussiness is just an unfortunate part of babyhood and, as a result, there is nothing that you can do to completely eliminate this undesirable behavior. You can, however, likely reduce the frequency with which your child fusses. To cut it down, you must first identify the cause of his distress. Determine the likely cause by taking note of when your child exhibits the behavior and by looking for any similarities. For example, if your child seems to get cranky around bed or nap time, over-exhaustion is probably the culprit. After identifying the cause of the fussiness, take steps to eliminate the problem: Put your baby to bed a bit earlier, for example, and see if the cranky attitude disappears.
