Boy

According to the Social Security Administration, the number 1 name for baby boys in 2009 was Jacob. If you like this name, or its biblical or historical significance, you can use alternative versions of the name Jacob. Alternatives include Jakob, Jake or Jacobb. The second most popular name in the United States in 2009 was Ethan. The Oklahoma State Department had these two switched in 2008, making Ethan the most popular and Jacob the second most popular. The third most popular baby boy name, both in Oklahoma and across the nation, was Michael. Alternative names or nicknames might include Mikey, Mike or Mick. In New York in 2008, the most popular baby boy name was Jayden. If you like the sound of this name, alternatives might include Grayden or Hayden.

Girl

In 2009, the most popular baby girl name across the United States was Isabella, according to the Social Security Administration. The name Isabella comes with a number of variations, including Bella, Belle and Izzy. These also make great pet or nicknames, if the full name Isabella seems too formal to you. The second most popular name, and the most popular in Oklahoma in 2008, was Emma. If you want a similar name, think of Emmy or Emily, which was the most popular in New York City. Olivia was the third most popular girl name across the United States in 2009. Shorter or cuter versions of this name might include Liv, Livy or Ollie. Sophia has also been a popular name, ranking number 4 in the United States in 2009. Variations could include Sofia or Sophie.

Unisex

Whether you are unsure of the sex of your baby or you just like the sound of gender-neutral names, you may find the names that work well for both boys and girls to be appealing. The Oklahoma State Department gathered a list of the most popular gender-neutral names in 2008. Topping the list was the name Peyton. Variations of this name for either girls or boys might include Payton, Peyten or Payten. Riley ranked second in this list of names for either sex.

Oliver trumps Jack after 16 years in Top Baby Names 2010

After a whopping 16 years as the most popular boys name in the UK, Jack has finally been bumped off top spot. The most popular name for baby boys in the UK is now Oliver.

Olivia remains the number one name for baby girls.

The list of most popular names 2010 reveals some monikers have completely dropped in popularity, some have risen several places and others have vanished entirely! Traditional names like Stanley sit alongside names of popular celebrities, like Lily.

A non-mover from 2009 in the girls list is Sophie, still second most popular. Lily jumped five places to third, and Emily and Ruby complete the top five.

Lacey, (shared by EastEnders actress Lacey Turner aka Stacey Slater), is also on the up, soaring 20 places from number 57 to 37th.

Florence is also becoming increasingly popular, moving up 33 places, as is Maisy.
In the boys list Harry stays in third place for another year after Oliver (1st) and Jack (2nd), while Charlie and Alfie, both non-movers, make up the top five.
The list was compiled by parenting club Bounty from names given to 423,000 children born in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland during 2010.
Yesterday, Faye Mingo, spokeswoman for bounty.com said: ''Our records show that parents are continuing to be influenced by popular culture and celebrity trends.
“However, parents are looking to a wide range of sources for influence and also seem to be rediscovering more traditional, ‘old-fashioned’ names like Ava and Stanley which have been more associated with grandparents in the past.
Faye Mingo added: “A recent study we ran found that one in five parents regret the names they have chosen for their children, so it’s more important than ever for parents to choose a name them and their child will love for the rest of their life.
“It’s hard to predict what we’ll see next year but it’s most probable that celebrities and popular culture will again play a part – and with a royal wedding on the horizon we may well see an increase in Williams and Kates born in celebration!”

Choosing a baby name is an important task. The name you choose today will be used by your child for the remainder of his days. Most parents choose the baby's name before the baby is born. Whether you have an interest in all things old-fashioned or you just want to show your family tree's roots, a name from the 1700s could be a perfect fit for your child. Many of the names popular in the 1700s are still popular today.

Aaron

Many boys were called Aaron in the 1700s and the name held its strength for centuries. In 2010, Aaron was listed among the top 100 names chosen for baby boys. The name Aaron comes from a Hebrew history and loosely translates to mean "mountain of strength." In the Bible, the brother of Moses is named Aaron, and he was the first high priest of Israel.

Melatiah

The name Melatiah was not gender specific during the 1700s, according to Nickelodeon. Both little boys and little girls carried the name throughout their lives. The name is rooted in the Bible and means "deliverance of the Lord." Historically, the name has not maintained its popularity, and in recent years was declared number 4,033 on the list of all-time popular baby names on the Australian website, MyBaby.

Lydia

Little girls named Lydia in the 1700s were named after an area of Asia named Lydia. The name loosely translates to a "woman of purple," which in ancient times meant the woman was wealthy.

Elizabeth

The name Elizabeth made its way into households throughout the 1700s and continues to be popular in modern culture. The name has a Hebrew foundation and means "God's promise."

Jonas

Jonas was another name that was popular in the 1700s. Derived from the biblical name Jonah, it means "dove." The name managed to maintain its popularity through the 1990 U.S. Census and placed 816th out of 1,220 names.

Oliver

Oliver was a popular name for little boys in the 1700s. Its roots can be found within the Latin language. The name Oliver means "olive tree." Fans of 12th century literature may remember that one of the knights in the poem "Chanson de Roland" was named Oliver. The name continued its popularity through the 1990 U.S. Census, when it was rated 319th most popular out of 1,220 baby names.

Lucy

Ranked 208 out of 1,220 baby names in the U.S. Census, Lucy was popular in the 1700s as well. It has a Latin origin and translates to "light." Several popular variations of the name are Lu, Luci and Lucia.

Molly

The name Molly hails from Ireland and was popular in the 1700s. Later in U.S. history, the term "moll" became a slang term for a prostitute or the girlfriend of a gangster, but it never interfered with the popularity of the name Molly, which ranks 317 out of 1,270 names during the 1990 U.S. Census.
